We know that dealing with credit issues can feel confusing, frustrating, and even costly when you're trying to reach a big milestone like buying a home or a car. That's why we're all about empowering you to achieve your financial goals—and the very first step is simple: getting a free copy of your credit history.

We recognise that most people don't want to jump on the phone and talk about their debts, so let's keep this straightforward and accessible.

Know Your Rights: How to Get Your Free Credit Report

In Australia, you are legally entitled to receive a copy of your consumer credit report from the three main credit reporting bodies (CRBs): Equifax, Experian, and illion.

This report is the blueprint of your credit history, and checking it regularly is crucial to ensure it’s accurate and up-to-date. After all, no one should be punished by credit providers for issues they are not responsible for.

You can generally get a free copy of your credit report under a few different criteria:

  • Once Every Three Months: You are entitled to a free copy of your report from each agency every three months. This is a great change from the old 12-month rule, giving you more power!

  • After a Credit Refusal: If you've been refused credit within the last 90 days, you can request a free copy.

  • After a Correction: You can request a free copy if you have asked for a correction and your credit information has been fixed on your file.

Why Check All Three?

The three credit reporting bodies—Equifax, Experian, and illion—may hold slightly different information about you. For example, one might have a record of an old credit card application that another doesn't.

If you are generally in the process of seeking credit, it's always a good idea to check your file with all three agencies to get a complete picture of your creditworthiness.

Getting Your Report Quickly

The CRBs are required by law to provide your free report to you within 10 days of your request, but in many cases it's much quicker than that.

If you need it sooner than 10 working days, or if you've already had a free report from that specific agency in the last three months and don't meet one of the other criteria, you may be charged a fee.
